The first thing to consider in choosing between a deck or patio is whether your new outdoor living space is on ground level. If you’re building high off the ground, or uneven terrain, a deck is the choice. But, if your outdoor living space is relatively level, and at ground level you have choices.

Decks are great no matter the ground underneath. They’re very customizable, absorb heat well, so they stay cooler, and as a rule to retain a strong return on investment for resale.

Patios usually last longer, require less maintenance, require no permits to build, and are usually less costly. That said, patios aren’t for uneven terrain, require more construction and are prone to cracks or stains.
